Secure Your Career Path And Excel During Recession

The most full-proof way to keep your job is to excel at it. Go above and beyond in your duties, be proactive during work, and excel at everything you do. In a nutshell, do something great.
Making things happen at your job that will get the attention of your superiors and colleagues is essential. We can’t simply follow our job descriptions, take things literally and at their bottom line, but do what is best, and do it with excellence. Do it even better the second time. Do it more quickly than anyone else, do it more effectively than anyone else, and do it the right way. Do it the way it is supposed to be done, and then do some extra.

Much good work is lost for the lack of a little more.  ~Edward H. Harriman

If you are in sales, study strategies that earn more revenue for your company. Any company, whether they are laying off or not, will not typically cut the people that are bringing in the money. Even if they are paying you more than others, the money that you are bringing in will validate your salary, and your extra work will pay for itself as you save your job single handedly.

Not only should excel at your job, but also be proactive in seeking out work. Go to colleagues and help them with their jobs.  Let them know that you are willing to put in extra hours to do extra work.

Look to do this work with the kind of expertise that your supervisors are looking for, and let them know that you are willing to do more. Let them know that you can work outside of your area of expertise or job description, and let them know that you are willing to put in the time to learn other tasks aside from the ones you are normally responsible for.

Above all of this extra effort, be proactive. While work-life balance is definitely important, understand that whatever time outside of your normal work hours that you are investing is going to give you the advantage over your fellow employees who typically do not think to do so.

Whatever your boss is paying you, he will be glad to retain you. Your supervisors will see you as a resource for multiple tasks and recognize your value over that of your co-workers. They will be glad to hold onto your position as long as possible.

The old adage “Keeping your nose to the grindstone”, will position you better than any other worker to maintain your employment. Any boss will hesitate to fire a worker who is accomplishing so much for the company. Knowing that letting you go will mean a hit for productivity is a powerful ally in the fight to recession-proof your job.

Another important consideration as you climb the corporate ladder, you will notice those with loose, careless grips on the ladder ultimately fall off. Take note and understand why those who do fail have failed. Learn from their mistakes.

Do not work only when superiors are watching, but stay attached to the job while you are on your own, or surrounded by co-workers. Word moves around the office, and this will often reach the lower and middle levels of management. If your job is at risk, knowing that your work is essential to productivity will sway your supervisor’s opinion any day of the week.
